Press Release: Blue Laser Poised to Top DVD and CD Sales Records

Norwich, VT USA. Entertainment economy and technology forecaster Infotech predicts a bullish market for home media storage in general and blue laser recorders in particular. Infotech research indicates a simultaneous decline in sales of two formats, CD and DVD over the next 5 years. The anticipated strong growth in consumer content collecting over the next five years is among the very favorable conditions cited by the veteran trend modelers. “Unlike previous generations,” observed Julie Schwerin, Infotech founder and CEO, “the majority will be recordable devices.”

The fifth generation holographic disc will enter the market by the end of the decade, but risks being eclipsed by nanotech storage technologies before realizing its full potential.

Commenting on the forecast, Infotech’s Julie Schwerin said: “A definitive forecast that blue laser disc formats will substantially raise the bar compared to DVD and CD sales records will be contradictory to the interests of some, yet affirmative to the instincts of many. Both the manufacturers and the content providers stand to profit from blue laser discs.”

The proliferation of consumer created content in the form of photographs, videos, websites, and music in the commons, plus the rise in legitimate and illegitimate acquisition of copyright content as ownership controls are increased over usage rights, plus commensurate increases in storage density of complimentary storage technology including magnetic hard drives and FLASH memory chips, plus growth in broadband transmission and digital broadcast of high definition motion video downloaded to local storage, plus consumer demand for centralized storage of media properties in a hub on a home network connecting CE and PC devices, plus the serendipity of two generations peaking and declining within five years of one another all combine to propel blue laser to unprecedented heights.

The characteristics blue laser technology needs to exhibit to achieve the profit margins expected are comparable reliability and economies of scale to previous generations. The model assumes interoperability of multiple formats without a standard, and favors an order of magnitude capacity increase. Four out of six applications are predicted to be successful for the forecast to be realized: prerecorded video, prerecorded audio, prerecorded games, prerecorded multimedia, CE recorder, and PC recorder.
